During the seven years that it was open, Rhizome hosted over 1,000 events in collaboration with a wide array of community groups. Events were held on most Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and ranged from lectures and panel discussions to film screenings to "free stores", children's events, musical performances--and everything in between. Each month's calendar of events was curated to present diverse perspectives on critical issues, lift up an intersectional, anti-oppression analysis, and allow for relationships to be built and deepened. The calendar was sent out monthly to 2,000 email list subscribers.

Rhizome will spring up again! Rhizome co-coordinators Lisa and Vinetta plan to re-open Rhizome in Toronto at some point in the future.

A note on our name: In the botanical sense, a rhizome is a root system that some plants (like lilies and orchids and ginger and bamboo) use to spread themselves about. While the roots of most plants point generally downward, the rhizome is a horizontal root system that runs parallel to the surface of the ground. The plant sends shoots up from nodes in the rhizome, creating what look like many separate plants. These seemingly unrelated individuals are actually all connected, through a system that's not immediately visible to the eye.
